Maya Angelou claims, “The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” In this lesson you are going to be exploring what home means to you. What does it look like, sound like, smell like? Who or what is there? Is it a place? Is it a person? Is it an activity? If you had to simplify what home means to you into a few icons, what would they be? You will be creating two compositions with these icons and using multiple processes to make prints about what home looks like to you. Using either Photoshop or Illustrator to create a drawing, you will then laser cut out of a wood block that will be used to print. Using plexiglass and markers, you will also make monotypes. And lastly, you will have the choice to either use x-acto knife and paper to create an overlay for your monotypes OR traditional woodcut techniques to create some more prints/compositions. Finally, you will be asked to defend what you consider to be your best “print” in a group discussion.
